Patterns of transnational regulation: how networks and institutions shaped societies and markets throughout the 20th century

vendredi, 8. février
10:30 jusqu'à 13:00 heures
Salle 3023

The panel investigates the history of globalization in the late 20th century by focusing on different forms of regulation of market societies. This includes regulation through social and private insurance, regulation of international services, and the influence of philanthropy on international public health. These fields all deal with social and market risks inherent to contemporary societies. Different from the social science literature on "globalization", the sinergia network takes a historical perspective by emphasizing and historicizing patterns and agents of change. Empirically, the network investigates international organizations (ILO, WHO), private foundations (Rockefeller Foundation) and influential specialized associations (International Congress of Actuaries, International Social Security Association). The panel will look at these organizations as laboratories and places of interaction where various vectors of internationalization met. It investigates the actions of the individuals who worked in or brought to life these institutions. It also pays attention to the networks that linked these actors, and how these institutions used these networks as levers for their action. Thus, the panel intends to contribute to the history of globalization and international relations by emphasizing and historicizing new patterns and agents of change beyond states and markets. It examines these fields in a historical perspective rather than focusing only on recent developments, as most of the «globalization» scholarship tend to do.
